Boston, MA: “OUT / IN” new sculptural works by Julia Shepley, will open at the Boston Sculptors Gallery on Wednesday October 6, and continues through Sunday November 7, 2010. There will be an artist talk on Friday, October 8, from 7-8 pm, an opening reception on October 16, from 4-7 pm, and a First Friday closing reception on November 5, from 5-8 pm. The receptions are free and open to the public.
Suspended in a defined area of the front gallery, a large-scale installation entitled Sky Habitation slowly revolves casting shadows. Furniture parts dissolve into carved sticks woven through transparent and wooden discs. The parts interact, overlap and cast shadows on the floor and walls to suggest a fusion of sky, trees and human presence.
A series of framed relief drawings, included in the exhibition, are working drawings made in conjunction with the installation, Sky Habitation. Constructed of Mylar, wood and paper they illustrate the artist’s playful and complex process of working.
Also included is a wall of new untitled thread and glass drawings. Curved glass panels carved with marks are punctured with luminescent threaded lines that connect to a billowed sheet of drawing and shadows behind. The play of object and shadow is an extension of a similar interplay in Sky Habitation. The abstract imagery is inspired by collaborative work the artist is doing currently with Swedish scientist Tina Trollmo.
